The BEMW Rally Team finished 2009 with a strong performance in the rallysprint at Jenolan State Forest. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Blue Mountains bushland, the team competed in six competitive stages, running three passes each over two stages of 8km and 12km.
The BEMW team were determined to set a fast pace after their disappointing result at the previous event; their efforts were rewarded as they set the second-fastest time on Stage 1, upstaged only by a turbo 4WD Mitsubishi Galant VR4.
Stage 2 saw an equally impressive drive, culminating in third-fastest time, before returning to second-fastest time on Stage 3. Unfortunately, the Puncture Fairy made another unwelcome appearance just 2km into Stage 4, waving its magic wand at the right rear tyre. With over 10kms remaining in the stage, Mark and Matt decided to stop and change it, subsequently losing over three minutes. With one more run over each stage remaining, the team fitted two used (but better condition) tyres to the rear and returned to set the second-fastest times on both of the last two stages.
Overall, the team finished 11th from 30 starters, with the event being won by Jamie Neale in his Mitsubishi Galant VR4. However, the BEMW team gained enough points to take out the overall AMSAG Open Championship - that is 4WD, rear-wheel drive, and front-wheel drive combined.
After the event Mark was able to take two sponsors for a ride in the BMW along the 8km stage. Penrite Oil Company arranged for an employee of the Repco Auto Parts store at Taren Point to take the first ride. From reports which came a few days later - he was a little speechless immediately after the ride - he thoroughly enjoyed his first rally experience. The second ride went to Imad, one of the owners of Sydney Wide European Autos. Imad spent the first few kilometres convinced that he was going to die as the trees lining the edge of the road flashed past, but by the end was wanting more.
It seems the rally bug has bitten two more people, with both sponsors looking forward to sharing in more of the BEMW Team excitement in future rounds. The BEMW Rally Team owes much of its success to the support of these sponsors throughout the season.
